I was tasked with creating single artwork for a song. Inspired by the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, I decided to create something beautiful and strange. This 9x9 watercolor painting is comprised entirely of moths--silkworms comprising the fingers, cocoons for the arms, and various species of moths coming together to form the body. The closer you look, the more there is to find. I love to incorporate detail in that way.
I love putting in all of those tiny details, and it was a joy to search through hundreds of moth reference images, looking for ones that were the right fit for the gaps that I needed to fill.
To really make it pop, I painted this vivid background with contrasting colors, like a candle in a dark room, then added a thin gold border for an extra flourish.
All in all, I love this piece for how much it stands out. It's weird. It's cool. It's different!
